Our Sandhill Cranes
Spotted on our walk today.
Over 18,000 cranes fly in to Albuquerque every year during the fall and winter months. By March they’ve all departed. Sandhill cranes can weigh up to 14 pounds. The birds grow to 4 feet in height measured from toe to the top of the head when they’re standing. They mate for life. When they go to sleep, they like to stand in shallow water, often on one leg, with their heads and necks tucked on or under one of their shoulders. How do I know all this is true? Because I read in on the internet.

Judy Chicago
Who would have thought that Judy Chicago would live and work in Belen, a little town 30 minutes south of Albuquerque? We visited her gallery there today. She lives in an old hotel (renovated by her husband, Donald Woodman) across the street from the gallery. A series of gorgeous photos by Donald were on display. He took the photos last year during the pandemic, when they were "entrapped, constrained, suppressed." The photos are of Judy’s colored smoke bombs in the outdoor area around their home.
Snow is coming.
After Christmas Sale
I had a terrible time photographing this! Remind me never to do a painting on a grid again.

Dear L and T, Wishing you a healthy new year filled with inspiration and light.
Cheers, Anne and Peter

Greetings fellow Solstice observers,
Here is a Scissor-tailed Flycatcher which is our bird for the Solstice, an unusual visitor from the MidWest that has come here a few years in a row, discovered this morning a few miles from our house. Surely a bird of such beauty is a harbinger of a better time where we can put the troubles of the recent age behind us.
We’re hoping for good weather to see the Solstice conjunction tonight. If you are able to see it too, we’ll look forward to your reports!

Wally (of the first panel) emailed this to me today. Yep. He saved our card from thirty-one years ago.

Anne's Birds Are Flying Off the Walls
Anne is having an exhibition at her gallery called Bird’s Eye View. She did 60 paintings where she imagined being a bird traveling the 60 years of her life. We put together a book of those paintings. Well, the birds have been flying off the gallery walls! So she’s done a whole new group of paintings to take their place, and these are four of the new ones. The show runs through December 27 but will remain on view through December 31 by appointment.
